Phil was born and grew up in Brisbane. He is passionate about Queensland.
After attending Woloowin and Eagle Junction State Schools, Phil attended Kedron State High School, Kedron Park Teacher’s College, the University of Queensland and the University of New England. He holds a Certificate of Teaching, Bachelor of Education Studies, Graduate Diploma of School Counselling and a Master’s Degree in Public Policy.
Phil has spent 38 years as a member of the Queensland Public Service. He has worked as a primary and secondary teacher, guidance officer, counsellor in a TAFE College and University, Principal Education Officer, Principal Policy officer, Principal Project Officer within the Education Department. Phil is proud of his Public Service background and pays tribute to the role of the Public Service in implementing the intent of Government.
Phil is known for his involvement in the nine year battle he undertook to have Westfield allowed to build the Helensvale Town Centre. A street in the complex has been named in his honour.
Phil and his wife Astra have lived in Helensvale for 22 years and their two children attended local state schools and universities.
In the Community
Phil has long been a community activist, and has a belief in building strong communities. He is currently patron of the Helensvale Community Association, President of the Helensvale Community Centre Association, patron of the Village Community Service at Studio Village and a member of the Nerang Community Association. He is also a member of the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE Council. In 2003 he was awarded a Centenary Medal for “Outstanding Contribution to the Community”.
Phil has a keen sense of justice and being a dedicated unionist he was elected President of the Queensland Public Sector Union. He held this position in addition to his full time job until March 2006. Phil undertook this work while working full-time in his public service role.
In the Electorate
Phil has a policy of being as accessible as possible to his constituents. Phil attends Helensvale Westfield and Helensvale Plaza every Thursday and is available to speak to constituents on any matter of concern or interest. He finds this a great way to meet people and keep in touch with important issues. When Parliament is in session a member of Phil’s staff will be in attendance.
Phil’s office provides advice and referral on a range of matters. His office is a vital link between his constituents, community organisations and Government Departments. If there is a matter of concern to you then it is a matter of concern for Phil and it is important that he knows about it.
At his Nerang Office, Phil’s dedicated staff members are happy to answer your enquiries, source information or provide copies of legislation. If necessary they will arrange an appointment to see Phil at his office, your home, or your place of business.
Phil can assist community groups with information about Government grants, funding, printing or letters of support.
Phil is a Justice of the Peace and there is always a Justice of the Peace or a Commissioner for Declarations on hand at his office to assist in the signing of important documents.
